About Barbara

I am an Air Force brat that joined the Navy. I am what many in the military call a “mustang.” I enlisted in the Navy in 1979 and was one of the first females to qualify in the Navy Nuclear Power Program. After completing my bachelor’s degree, New School, New York, in 1983, I was commissioned, and served as Administrative Officer of the Strategic Studies Group, Naval War College and then Administrative Officer, Surface Warfare Officer School Command in Newport, RI. While in Newport I earned my Captain’s sailing certification in cold, cold, cold Narragansett Bay.

From Rhode Island I was ordered to California where I served as Officer in Charge, Personnel Support Detachments Miramar and Coronado. I was the lead in activating reservists for Desert Shield and Desert Storm; I oversaw the support of evacuees from the 1991 eruption of Mt Pinatubo and successfully repatriated hundreds of refugees back to the Philippines once danger passed.

My first job after retiring from the Navy was as an executive recruiter for healthcare systems preparing for Y2K. I then did marketing and applications development for HIPAA compliance and Enterprise-wide Systems Integration. I also served as education director for Beckman Oral Motor, bringing Beckman Oral Motor protocol to MUSC. I returned to school in 2013 and graduated from Trident Technical College’s accounting program. Through this program, I learned that understanding how money works can change your life. As a licensed health and life insurance agent I help folks protect and grow their retirement money, look for ways to increase cashflow and minimize cost, and ensure you get the biggest bang out of your healthcare dollars. Even the best-laid plans can be disrupted by life. I will be there for you when things happen and help you navigate the bureaucracy of healthcare and ensure your covered for the unexpected.

I volunteer at the Red Cross and was recognized as the Lowcountry South Carolina American Red Cross 2016 Rookie of the Year. You can find me in October at Goose Creek’s St. James UMC Pumpkin Patch painting faces and helping folks find the perfect pumpkin. I have done some illustrations for stories included in Michael Heitzler’s narratives about Goose Creek history.

I’m here. I’m local. I care. Contact me to schedule a face-to-face meeting, over-the-phone meeting, or a virtual face-to-face meeting through Zoom.
